Queen as a band or rather a brand is well into the drinks business. After their Killer Queen Vodka they introduced the Millionaire Waltz Malbec and recently they launched the Bohemian Lager. God knows what`s going to be their next move. I would suggest to come out with a whisky or bourbon. As these items are featured on the band`s official website I have to think that they are supported and have been approved or tasted by the members of Queen as well.
The Queen's Millionaire Waltz Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina got its name after the song on the album “A Day at the Races” which featured the band's signature melodies "Tie Your Mother Down" and "Somebody to Love". We had a chance to sample this particular wine with a remarkable 14.5% ABV. Hey, this is a New World wine, you should approach it with caution, alright? So, I love the label which is inspired by Freddie Mercury's stage outfits. Checked. However, I don't really get the so-called “personalising message panel”, a blank space on the label it seems really odd to me to leave a message on that to the one I intend to surprise with a bottle.
Ok, let's cut the crap, let`s check how's the wine. Is it any good? Well, the tasting notes give us hints about violet shiny notes, lovely nose of black fruits and liquorice and I wish I could relate with them. The truth is that the quality of the wine in the bottle is not better than any other New World wine you can find in a supermarket or off-licence in the £8.00 to £10.00 range. The price tag actually reflects to the quality so at least you won't feel ripped off spending a tenner on a bottle. This wine is from mass production with no real characteristics and lack of freshness. Maybe it is worth to cook with it and it can give a nice kick to a stew but I don't give much credit for it.
I'm sorry to say that but this wine is about to leave you disappointed if you decide to open it rather than place it on the shelf with the other rock relics and memorabilia. It`s sad that Queen is associated with a such poor quality wine. Attention fans, keep it unopened in order to avoid an unpleasant wine experience. In the case of Millionaire Waltz the look is way better than the taste.
